Inside the Heat-Treatment Process for Export-Ready Wood Pallets

Heat treatment is the international standard for preparing wooden pallets and crates for global transport. Many businesses know that the ISPM-15 stamp is required for export, but fewer understand what actually happens during the treatment itself. The process is carefully controlled to ensure that wood packaging is safe for cross-border movement and poses no risk to ecosystems worldwide.

Here’s a closer look at what takes place inside the heat-treatment chamber.

Step 1: Preparing and Loading the Chamber

Once the pallets or wooden packaging components are ready, they are stacked inside a sealed heat-treatment chamber. The load is arranged with intentional spacing to allow warm air to circulate evenly around every piece of timber—ensuring uniform treatment.

Step 2: Controlled Heating

Industrial heating systems gradually increase the temperature inside the chamber. Multiple sensors continuously measure heat not only in the air but also in the core of the wood.

To meet ISPM-15 requirements, the wood must reach a minimum of 56°C at its core and be held at that temperature for at least 30 consecutive minutes.
This process eliminates insects, larvae, eggs, and microorganisms that could otherwise spread to new environments via transport.

Step 3: Monitoring and Compliance Recording

Throughout the cycle, digital systems log temperature readings and treatment times. This data serves as proof of compliance and ensures that every piece of wood has been subjected to the required conditions. Treatment is approved only once the complete requirements have been met.

Step 4: Cooling and Marking

After heating, the wood is cooled, checked, and then officially marked with the ISPM-15 stamp. This mark is recognised internationally and confirms that the pallet or crate is suitable for export. It allows goods to pass through customs without unnecessary delays or quarantine restrictions.
